It is perhaps hard to see the significance of a song from an English band that has only been around the scene for just over a year. Two young men from West London formed Jungle, in early 2013. They enlisted the help of an assortment of other musicians and backing singers, and released their eponymous debut album in July 2014. It got immediate rave reviews, and was added to the shortlist for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize that year. Despite a lot of radio airplay, this single release did not exactly set the charts on fire, but the band’s reputation for live performances continues to grow.
I never thought I would see a group from England that was able to encapsulate the style of 70s Funk and Soul so well, and to bring it into the modern mainstream into the bargain. In a market saturated with solo singer-songwriters, and execrable boy-bands, this arrived in my ears like a breath of fresh air. It is simply right up my musical street, in every way imaginable. Unlike the work of so many around these days, the live performance is just as good as the full production record. So here is a link to one.
