  4. I guess X marks the spot in your film challenge where you came up empty as far as recommendations are concerned.

    The obvious candidates are “Xanadu” (1980) [silly/lazy plot, but great music], “The X-Files: Fight the Future” (1998) [fans of the TV series were not alienated!], “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008) [fans couldn’t believe their eyes—they waited ten years for this?], the “X-Men” franchise (2000…) [a real CGI-fest!], and the “XXX” franchise (2002…) [a guilty pleasure with over-the-top action!]. All of these films have some merit, and a few of them are quite good. But only one of them inspired me to buy a number of plastic figurines, so I’ll go with that one: “THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE.”

  6. Pete, as mentioned above, “Xanadu” is cinema’s greatest rollerskating musical – just as bad as you can imagine, although ELO does provide a great theme that is just as cheesy as the film. Because films have different titles in different countries, the French horror film “X-Tension” is pretty good, renamed “High Tension” in the US and “Switchblade Romance” in other places…

  7. I saw ten minutes of the first X-men, which was about nine too many. I guess even Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have to make a living. If you squint, maybe you’d allow “eXistenz”? Haven’t seen it, and not on your “E” list, just wondered if you’ve seen it? Other than “The Fly” I haven’t seen any Cronenberg movies

Pete, I’m surprised you didn’t offer us your insights into Xala, the satirical Senegalese comedy about a businessman cursed with crippling erectile dysfunction on the day of his marriage to his third wife, which is one of Ousmane Sembène’s best films, though some prefer Touki Bouki or even La Noire de… (“The black girl of…”).

    Actually, I haven’t seen it either but the film was ranked #83 in Empire magazine’s “The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema” in 2010, and it’s a slow day. Perhaps one of our Francophone (or Wolofphone) colleagues may know of it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073915/

    I got nothing else. The only X film I remember seeing was called just ‘X’ and was a 2011 Aussie erotic thriller, which I couldn’t really recommend, though critic Margaret Pomeranz liked it well enough http://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/txt/s3367032.htm

      However, the Australian one seems to have piqued my interest… 🙂

  10. Other than the X-files and X-Men I couldn’t think of anything else. Checking I got Xanadu, but as much as I enjoyed it at the time (and I like ELO and Olivia Newton-John), I don’t think I’d add it here. XXX (no… although I like Pitch Black). I can’t remember if I’ve ever watched Xiu-Xiu. I think it’s a quiet day…

  14. DC’s X-men, several movies with confusing alternative timelines, but again the big hitters line up to be in these movies. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Michael Fassbender,Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, the list goes on, and of course must mention the nicest of guys, Hugh Jackman, who finishes his time in the Franchise with the latest Wolverine movie and will be greatly missed.
