Almost dead?

I have written before on here about Ollie’s love of gardening.
With a very hot day here today, it seemed like a good time to get on with cutting the grass, and cleaning the windows.

As always, Ollie was keen to be by my side during the lawn-mowing. I kept making him go to the area where I wasn’t cutting, but as you know, he is obsessed with being as close to me as is possible.

Almost finished, I checked to see where he was. He was sitting about three feet away, tail wagging. As I started mowing again, I dragged the mower back across the grass, only to discover that Ollie had rapidly changed position, and was right behind my knees. As I fell backward, I was conscious of the heavy rotary blade, close to my toes and feet.

Luckily, it has a ‘fail-safe’ feature. As I let go of the control handles, the motor ceased to operate. Unfortunately, the slack handle pinched a section of my palm, near the thumb, removing some skin as I fell over. The still-whirring blade stopped a few inches short of my feet and legs, and I had one of those ‘moments’, as I watched it.

It is serious enough to contemplate that the heavy blade might well have killed me. Ollie was sent away, in no uncertain terms. So, if you ever wonder why I have suddenly stopped posting, and offer no reasons or excuses, I suggest you contact Ollie, and see what he has been up to.

  1. Paint me a picture Pete, do you use a hedge trimmer? I keep thinking the blades should be underneath the mower and on the ground unless you flipped it? Either way I’m glad to hear both you and Ollie are safe. You’ll be pleased to hear I’ve met a dog too. A friend has taken on a rescue dog and he’s not too big so I wasn’t nervous to meet him but we’ve fallen in love. He’s name is Sam The Wonderdog but I call him Sammie and he’s just the best. He’s 12 years old and just very chilled until he sees his food getting put out. He has a lovely owner but now a smitten uncle too. πŸ™‚

    1. It’s a large electric rotary hover mower, with the blade underneath. But as I fell back, I dragged it up the front of my legs. Luckily, I also released the switch as I fell, which meant the safety cutout stopped the blade turning. I got a couple of scratches, but no bad cuts or severed legs! πŸ™‚
Good news that you found a dog to like. Just a shame he is so old.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Lucky that both you and Ollie were fine, Pete. It sound like a very scary accident. My Dad cut himself very badly with an angle grinder one when the blade was faulty and it fractured. This reminded me of that incident.

    1. I think he’s trying to get me laid up with a minor injury. That would stop me going out anywhere without him, in his mind. Just as well it wasn’t a petrol chainsaw!
      Cheers mate. Pete.

  3. You were lucky, Pete. These things can happen so quickly. Seconds. Scary. Ollie and Harry (our lab from some years ago) would have been the best of friends. Too many stories that are so similar. Gotta love dogs!

    1. Thanks, Jennie. Ollie’s desire to get ever closer to me at all times is beginning to re-write that dog-master relationship. I have to keep an eye out for him constantly now.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  4. The day will come when all this will be behind you. You are so lucky to have a faithful friend and companion like Ollie who has nothing to give but endless love. This was a close call but in time all things will heal. I am glad you are both safe and alright.

    1. Thanks, Cindy. I am feeling my age, and must pay more attention! x
By the way, thanks for calling me ‘precious’. That cheered me up no end! x

      1. I’ll be glad when this novel is done so I can start posting again. Your alphabet series has been a fun distraction. The month of June will be very very busy. Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me, precious. πŸ™‚

  5. Scary. Glad the fail safe mechanism worked. I guess everyone with pets and animal companions, should leave a letter with their attorney, “to be opened in the event of my untimely demise,” detailing our suspicions. My cat trips me on the stairs pretty regularly, but he knows there’s a dossier out there with his disciplinary record, evidence of catnip abuse issues, etc.
