My blog: Some thoughts

The first real day of winter today. Freezing wind, cold rain that felt like sleet. Dark and gloomy by early afternoon, and lights on just before 4. After Ollie’s dog walk, I sat in front of the computer and stared blankly at the screen. This time of year is normally the best time for blogging. Long dull evenings, not much to do outside, and little enthusiasm for venturing out into the cold and damp.

It is also close to the end of another year of blogging. One more year of keeping in touch with valued blogging friends, and meeting so many new ones too. A year when I have tried my best, often against the odds I can tell you, to be positive, and only look for the good things in my daily life and routine. It has been a year when Donald Trump and Brexit dominated many blogs. Countries divided, friend against friend, a civil war of words online. Better than the violent alternative, obviously. But still occasionally distressing.

But for my blog, it has been a great year. More views and new followers than ever before, and lots of comments and engagement on posts. Stories published outside of blogging, more photos taken and posted, and despite the increase in the time necessary to keep things running, it was time well spent. Once or twice this year, I have actually thought about stopping blogging. It takes up time that really should be used for other things. Things like routine maintenance around the house and garden, and reading, which is something I have virtually stopped doing, outside of the posts that I follow, and other articles online. But I would undoubtedly miss it, and more importantly, everyone in the community that I am happy to be a part of.

So on it goes, in the same old way. I tried something new this week, Poetry. Despite some positive feedback, I was far from happy with the results, and doubt you will be seeing any more poems from me on this blog. I have more guest posts on Sally Cronin’s blog coming up. Christmas themed posts from a few years back, that she is kindly revitalising for me. I have neglected to write any film articles for the estimable Curnblog.com of late, and that is something I should rectify soon. My new weekly post, ‘Thinking Aloud on a Sunday’ has been well-received, and may well lead to other themed ideas, in 2018.
I may post less film reviews next year though. To be honest, hardly anyone reads them, except for some stalwart film fans. And I have already watched the films. 🙂 If you would like me to carry on with those, please let me know in the comments, and I will.

My series of ‘Significant Songs’ is at the same level. Music is a matter of taste in every respect, so it is understandable that people tend to only react to songs or music that they also like. But I will continue with that series, as those songs mean something to me, however vague the connection might be.
My personal favourite category, the short stories I enjoy writing so much, will also continue, as and when the ideas form in my mind. But I am all-too aware that Ollie, and photos, are without doubt the most popular recurring themes here. I will try to remember to make time for posts about Ollie the dog, and to add more photos, until my space allowance expires.

But my blog would be a pale shadow of itself if not for your involvement and comments. So if you have any thoughts and suggestions about posts or categories, feel free to say what you think in the comments section below. I promise I won’t be offended or upset! December is soon upon us, and after that, we will be blogging in 2018. Even typing that number makes me feel as if I am writing science fiction!

My best wishes to everyone, as always. Pete.

  1. 2018 really does seem like a future year…and yet, there are no flying cars outside my window. The future is sorely disappointing in some ways (though my phone is pretty awesome).

Do you listen to audiobooks? I started listening to them a few years ago, particularly when walking Choppy, and I get through dozens of books a year (I’m up to 80 books this year, and most of those I listened to, rather than read the traditional way). I highly recommend them.

  2. If you abandon your blog it would leave a hole in the Internet that could not be filled so stop all the talk about abandoning your blog. You have a great blog and it is a joy to read. You might be blessing someone you have no idea about … someone who looks forward to reading you every day but who is shut in and cannot respond to you … You never know whose life it is that you are touching for the positive with your blog …. just keep doing what you are doing …. please … just do not abandon your blog!

    1. Thanks, John. I was only thinking about the other things that didn’t get done. But I carried on, and will no doubt continue in that same way for the foreseeable future.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  3. I love your short fiction. I also really appreciate any time you write about your environs. I am fascinated about your corner of the world, and I enjoy learning about it both from your walks and from your jaunts with Julie and/or Ollie.

  4. Its rare if I don’t enjoy what you post Pete, your short stories always hit the mark. Reading your comment on Theos page a while back about starting to write an episode in his absence made me wonder how a serialised story of your own would go?
Frags is right though, just keep on doing what you are doing 🙂

  5. This is lovely, Pete. Please continue with your Some Thoughts or Thinking blog. It is one of my favorites. I feel much the same way about blogging. It takes an enormous amount of time, and it is a great pleasure. The friends (like you) I have met are far more important than all the undone tasks and reading I have on my list. Best to you, Pete!

    1. Thanks, Julie. If your poetry attracts views, then that is a lot better than mine did. 🙂
I do post a lot, and almost every day. That might put some people off, but it does give me the interaction and engagement that keeps me interested.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. Pete, yes, it’s that time of the year again. I am one of those people who enjoy music when I listen to it but don’t tend to think about it much when I don’t (and these days as I also listen to books sometimes while I do other things, I listen to less music than ever). I love your short-stories, the pictures, the memories, and I love movies, so I always enjoy reading movie reviews (even if sometimes I might not get to watch the movie, or the review convinces me it is not for me).
I know what you mean about reading post and I’m ever grateful for your comments. I am not reading as many as I’d like because I have too many other things demanding my attention.
Be well and love to Ollie.

  7. Pete, I like all your posts. I have been a firm believer that one’s blog should be authentic. That means not second-guessing yourself. Write about what you love even if you know few will read it. I know when I do a photo post, most everyone seems to chime in. It’s easy, that’s why. In a blogging community, it’s hard to find the time to read longer posts. I also find it hard to read everything from those who post daily because my commitments keep me away from the computer (I’m glad for that or I’d be an addict.) When blogging ceases to be fun and crosses over to being a chore, I find taking a breather helps. As for reading! It is a shame if one stops reading. I read every day for an hour before sleep, and it’s one of my favorite times of the day. Read something entertaining and get back to it. 😉

  8. Personally, Pete, I’ve watched quite a few films after reading your reviews! I take less notice of the music reviews- it’s impossible to do everything… My one suggestion, which I try to follow myself, unsuccessfully I might add, is to set aside a day per week when you don’t blog, and do other things such as read. Otherwise, I think the blog’s great, and wouldn’t mind seeing more of Ollie! Above all, keep being positive 👍🌹🌺🌷🍁

  9. I’ve fairly recently found you Pete, but I really enjoy visiting you when I can, there’s something very authentic about the way you write. That’s why I think you should keep going with the poetry 🙂

    1. That is very nice of you to say such kind things, Gilly.
I am just not feeling Poetry though. It didn’t feel like the ‘real me’, and lacked that authenticity you mention.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  10. I love your blog Pete. I can’t read everything due to time constraints [if only we didn’t have to work – Sigh!] but I try to read as many as I can manage. I really like your A – Z posts to a them. I loved the books one and I also enjoy your short stories.

  11. Pete, I think you have a great mix of stuff – when I post about cult films, I worry I will lose someone who likes the food stuff, or the travel stuff, but I have multiple interests and so do you – post what’s on your mind or inspires you, and let us decide whether we want to share it, comment on it, or like it! Put some pressure on us!

    1. Thanks, FR. I am going on in much the same way, and just wondered what everyone thought. It’s not that I’m worried what readers think, just pleased to involve everyone when I can.
Happy to hear that you always enjoy it.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  12. Blogging is fun and I like taking part in challenges. Earlier I used to take part in photo challenges but over time that has become lesser. I was introduced to Haiku here and I have come to love it. It is a challenge to connect the idea and the number of syllables. Regards
